D. James Kennedy and James Dobson, to level the church-state wall.<\/p><p>By 2022, this behemoth\u2019s annual revenue exceeded $100 million.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-0cc6313 e-flex e-con-boxed ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0cc6313\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-f289003 e-con-full black-text-link e-flex ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f289003\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-810fd4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"810fd4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Litigation<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59d3345 black-text-link elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"59d3345\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>ADF litigated many of the cases over the last decade that have redefined religious freedom and attacked the wall of separation between church and state, including:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\">Insisting churches can remain open even in the middle of a raging coronavirus pandemic.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Attempting to reduce Americans\u2019 access to birth control.\u00a0<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Arguing that houses of worship should have a right to taxpayer funding to support a Missouri children\u2019s ministry.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">Defending businesses that refuse to serve LGBTQ folks, like the Colorado bakery that turned away a gay couple seeking a wedding cake.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Most recently, ADF was at the Supreme Court arguing that the owner of a website design business, 303 Creative LLC, should be able to refuse service to same-sex couples because of its owner\u2019s religious beliefs. The company had never offered wedding website design services, was never approached by a same-sex couple, and never had any civil rights enforcement action taken against it. But still, ADF argued that if this company were made to comply with the state civil rights and anti-discrimination laws that all other businesses follow, it would violate religious freedom and free-speech rights under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. And the six conservative justices agreed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-14ed5b9 e-flex e-con-boxed ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"14ed5b9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-25a3308 e-con-full e-flex ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-child\" data-id=\"25a3308\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b9f4ef1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b9f4ef1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Founded in homophobia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ffc096 white-text-link elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ffc096\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Homophobia and bigotry are baked into the ethos of ADF. ADF\u2019s obsession with denying the rights of LGBTQ+ people runs deep: Alan Sears, who ran ADF for its first 25 years, coauthored a book entitled\u00a0<em>The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principal Threat to Religious Freedom Today<\/em>. The title says it all: using \u201creligious freedom\u201d to oppose LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Sears likened his fight to overturn marriage equality to Abraham Lincoln\u2019s fight to abolish slavery, an analogy as historically flawed as it is appalling.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-6db48b2 e-flex e-con-boxed ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6db48b2\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-3acf80e e-con-full e-flex ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3acf80e\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f3d94f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f3d94f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Army of attorneys<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1c6d27 black-text-link elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1c6d27\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>ADF claims to have trained nearly 2,500 lawyers through its legal fellowships\u2014an army of young lawyers to assault church-state separation. With the fellowships, ADF \u201cseeks to recover the robust Christendomic theolo\u00adgy of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th centuries.\u201d AU\u2019s Rob Boston always believed that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/au.org\/the-latest\/church-and-state\/articles\/trapped-in-a-time-warp-christian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shadow Network sought to take us back to 1950<\/a>. \u201cTurns out I was off by about 1,500 years,\u201d he now says.<\/p><p>Despite its extremism, ADF has allies on our nation\u2019s highest court.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/au.org\/the-latest\/articles\/amy-coney-barrett-nomination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justice Amy Coney Barrett<\/a>\u00a0delivered lectures to ADF legal fellows for several thousand dollars each year from 2011 to 2016. The day after the Senate further packed the court and voted to confirm Barrett, ADF crowed: \u201cNewly confirmed Justice Amy Coney Barrett will hear an ADF case later this term.\u201d Barrett not surprisingly decided in favor of ADF. Based on Barrett\u2019s performance in Monday\u2019s oral argument, we expect something similar from her in the\u00a0<i>303 Creative LLC\u00a0<\/i>case ADF is litigating.<\/p><p>ADF has also burrowed its tendrils deep into the government at other levels. U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri was on ADF\u2019s fellowship faculty. Trump-era Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited ADF\u2019s headquarters and consulted the group on a massive \u201creligious liberty\u201d memo he imposed on the Department of Justice. Trump made an attorney in ADF\u2019s allied network, Noel Francisco, Solicitor General. Francisco then had the United States intervene in the case against the discriminatory Colorado bakery\u00a0<i>on the bakery\u2019s side<\/i>\u00a0when it reached the Supreme Court. He even participated in the oral argument himself.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-ef58632 e-flex e-con-boxed ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"ef58632\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-219f07d e-con-full e-flex ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-child\" data-id=\"219f07d\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-element elementor-element-14d8f7b e-con-full e-flex ae-bg-gallery-type-default e-con e-child\" data-id=\"14d8f7b\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0220f8 elementor-blockquote--skin-clean elementor-blockquote--align-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"f0220f8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\"A shadow network of Christian Nationalists and their political allies are working to destroy public education and church-state separation.
